Appointment of new BASW Cymru Professional Officer

BASW Cymru, part of the wider British Association of Social Workers organisation, is the largest professional membership organisation for social work in Wales. Its mission is to:
- Act for social workers!
- Act for social work!
- Act for a better society!
They deliver learning and career development opportunities, resources, advice, campaigns and representation.
Christian is a qualified social worker. Following a career that spanned practitioner and management roles across children and adult services, Christian returned to Swansea University, where he graduated, in 2007 after winning a secondment to lead a research project aimed at developing an evidence base for social work with older people. Since this time, he has been involved in a range of research projects linked to older people and social work and, in 2017, completed his PhD in Social Work. Christian takes up his new role with BASW Cymru in June.”
Commenting on his appointment, Christian said:
"It is a privilege to be appointed to this role with BASW Cymru and I am excited to work with the outstanding BASW Cymru team and wider BASW UK colleagues to promote the voice of social work, social workers and the communities, families and individuals we support, through collaborative partnership with stakeholders and our members in Wales.
“I have been an active member of BASW Cymru since 2016 and have served has Vice-Chair and Co-Chair of the National Standing Committee here in Wales. I look forward to continuing to work with the Committee and the wider membership across Wales.”

Further Information:
- Professional Officers influence social work policy, practice and social work education in the field of children and family and adult services. They also actively support BASW Cymru members and help recruit, retain the membership across Wales.
- Christian Beech is a qualified social worker, graduating with a Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work and MSc in Applied Social Studies from Swansea University in 2000. Following a career that spanned practitioner and management roles across children and adult services in a range of acute and community settings, Christian returned to Swansea University in 2007 after winning a secondment to lead a research project aimed at developing an evidence base for social work with older people. Since this time, he has been involved in a range of research projects linked to older people and social work and in 2017, completed his PhD in Social Work, which explored interprofessional working with risk and older people within multidisciplinary teams. In 2011, Christian joined the social work programme at Swansea initially as a Lecturer before being promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2014 and has occupied a range of key administrative and leadership roles including Programme Director of the BSc and MSc programmes respectively. Christian has been an active member of BASW Cymru since 2016 and has served has Vice-Chair and Co-Chair of the National Standing Committee.

Mae Cymdeithas Brydeinig Gweithwyr Cymdeithasol Cymru (BASW Cymru) yn falch iawn o groesawu Dr Christan Beech i rôl Swyddog Proffesiynol, yn dilyn proses recriwtio gynhwysfawr.
BASW Cymru, sy’n rhan o sefydliad ehangach Cymdeithas Gweithwyr Cymdeithasol Prydain, yw’r sefydliad aelodaeth proffesiynol mwyaf ar gyfer gwaith cymdeithasol yng Nghymru. Ei chenhadaeth yw:
• Gweithredu dros weithwyr cymdeithasol!
• Gweithredu dros waith cymdeithasol!
• Gweithredu dros gymdeithas well!
Maent yn darparu cyfleoedd dysgu a datblygu gyrfa, adnoddau, cyngor, ymgyrchoedd a chynrychiolaeth.
Mae Christian yn weithiwr cymdeithasol cymwys. Yn dilyn gyrfa a oedd yn rhychwantu swyddi ymarfer a rheoli ar draws gwasanaethau plant ac oedolion, dychwelodd Christian i Brifysgol Abertawe, lle graddiodd yn 2007 ar ôl ennill secondiad i arwain prosiect ymchwil gyda'r nod o ddatblygu sylfaen dystiolaeth ar gyfer gwaith cymdeithasol gyda phobl hŷn. Ers yr amser hynny, mae wedi bod yn ymwneud ag amryw o brosiectau ymchwil yn gysylltiedig â phobl hŷn a gwaith cymdeithasol ac, yn 2017, cwblhaodd ei PhD mewn Gwaith Cymdeithasol. Bydd Christian yn dechrau ar ei rôl newydd gyda BASW Cymru ym mis Mehefin.”
Wrth sôn am ei benodiad, dywedodd Christian:
“Mae’n fraint cael fy mhenodi i’r rôl hon gyda BASW Cymru ac rwy’n gyffrous i weithio gyda thîm rhagorol BASW Cymru a chydweithwyr ehangach BASW UK i hyrwyddo llais gwaith cymdeithasol, gweithwyr cymdeithasol a’r cymunedau, teuluoedd ac unigolion rydym yn eu cefnogi, trwy bartneriaeth gydweithredol â rhandeiliaid a’n haelodau yng Nghymru.
“Rwyf wedi bod yn aelod gweithgar o BASW Cymru ers 2016 ac wedi gwasanaethu fel Is-Gadeirydd a Chyd-Gadeirydd y Pwyllgor Sefydlog Cenedlaethol yma yng Nghymru. Edrychaf ymlaen at barhau i weithio gyda’r Pwyllgor a’r aelodaeth ehangach ledled Cymru.”
Wrth groesawu Christian i’w rôl newydd, ychwanegodd Cyfarwyddwr Cenedlaethol BASW Cymru, yr Athro Sam Baron:
“Mae tîm BASW Cymru yn croesawu’n gynnes benodiad Christian yn dilyn proses recriwtio a oedd yn cynnwys ymgeiswyr eithriadol o gryf.
“Mae Christian yn dod â chyfoeth o brofiad ac arbenigedd i’r rôl hon a fydd o fudd aruthrol i BASW Cymru a gweithlu gwaith cymdeithasol ledled Cymru.
“Llongyfarchiadau Christian ac rwy’n edrych ymlaen at eich cyfraniad parhaus a chefnogaeth i BASW Cymru a gweithwyr cymdeithasol.”

Ers yr amser hynny, mae wedi bod yn ymwneud ag amryw o brosiectau ymchwil yn gysylltiedig â phobl hŷn a gwaith cymdeithasol ac yn 2017, cwblhaodd ei PhD mewn Gwaith Cymdeithasol, a oedd yn archwilio gwaith rhyngbroffesiynol gyda risg a phobl hŷn o fewn timau amlddisgyblaeth. Yn 2011, ymunodd Christian â rhaglen gwaith cymdeithasol yn Abertawe, yn gyntaf fel Darlithydd cyn iddo gael ei ddyrchafu’n Uwch Ddarlithydd yn 2014 ac mae wedi cyflawni amryw o swyddi gweinyddol ac arweinydd allweddol gan gynnwys Cyfarwyddwr Rhaglen y rhaglenni BSc ac MSc yn y drefn honno. Mae Christian wedi bod yn aelod gweithgar o BASW Cymru ers 2016 ac mae wedi gwasanaethu fel Is-Gadeirydd a Chyd-Gadeirydd y Pwyllgor Sefydlog Cenedlaethol.
