The Student & Newly Qualified Group gives a voice to students and newly qualified social workers. Students and NQSWs are the future of social work and so it is important this group shares knowledge and ideas with other groups and wider social work groups to assist forging a positive future for social work and social workers.
The Student & NQSW Group runs events targeted at student social workers, helps campaigns on student issues like the student bursary, and annually releases a 'Top Tip Guide' for students.
May 2025 Update
Unlike most other BASW England thematic groups, there are natural ebbs and flows of group membership as people qualify and then leave the group as they move on into permanent roles in Social Work.
We are now in a period of growth and as we re-launch the group, we are very pleased that members Angela Agbala and Michelle Riddall have stepped forward to become chair and vice chair of the group: thanks to both for stepping up!
Not wanting to waste any time, they have also set some early goals including:
- Plan and deliver a ‘lunch & learn’ session on “Power Dynamics in Social Work Practice education”
- Work to develop guidance for both students and organisations with the aim of improving the student experience and reducing drop out rates
- Set up a drop in Student and NQSW support group and safe space, so that student and NQSW members can have access to a peer group for support and critical reflection with a focus on peer support when dealing with issues or bias in their placements
To find out about upcoming Student and NQSW support group and safe spaces, please see the BASW events page. Our ground rules for these events are available below.
The group is supported by BASW England professional officer, Andrew Reece andrew.reece@basw.co.uk
