BASW Cymru had petitioned the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales about our deep concerns for the well-being and human rights of older people in care homes, whose voices have been effectively silenced throughout lockdown.
BASW England wants to hear from people with lived experience and social workers involved in disaster and emergency responses past and present including the COVID 19 pandemic for book development.
BASW welcomes the announcement from the Westminster government today that the part-privatised probation service in England and Wales would be fully ‘renationalised’ after research and experience on the ground showed spectacular failures.
BASW will continue to campaign against racialised political discrimination, which has been magnified under Covid-19 and ‘hostile environment’ policies. The Government should not remain resistant to change on these issues. We urge you to engage with us and lobby your local MPs.
BASW Cymru has been in conversation with the Older People’s Commissioner for last couple of weeks about the appalling number of deaths in care settings. We have also shared our concerns about the essential role of social workers in upholding the human rights of older people and ensuring the voices of older people in care settings are heard.
For social workers to do their work efficiently and compassionately during the coronavirus pandemic they must be safe, we therefore look forward to receiving guidance on PPE, followed by the necessary equipment.
