BASW England & Foundations: a spotlight on Foundations’ series of practice guides for Social Work with children
Foundations*, formerly the What Works Centre for Children & Families, is delighted to be meeting online with BASW colleagues to share their practice guides*. These guides were commissioned by the Department for Education, to support delivery of the children's social care: national framework*
Foundations’ aim is to set out the strongest available evidence for leaders in the children’s social care sector to support effective practice and improve how services are commissioned, designed and delivered.
The webinar will be chaired by Rick Hood, professor of Social Work at Kingston University who will be joined by Vicky Lloyd and Harpreet Ahdan, senior practice advisers from Foundations: • Vicky has been a registered social worker for 30 years and has spent much of her career in fostering and short breaks for disabled children. • Harpreet has been a registered social worker for 20 years with experience spanning safeguarding, Fostering and adoption, with specific interest in Kinship Care as well as being a former Principal Social Worker.
This webinar will last 1.5 hours, and will offer a high level overview of each of the practice guides published to date: • Kinship Care (October 2024) • Parenting Through Adversity (0–10), (February 2025) • Mentoring and Befriending– for care-experienced children and young people and those at risk of going into care - (April 2025) • Parenting Disabled Children & Young People and those with Special Educational Needs (SEN) (July 2025)
There will then be an opportunity to break out into smaller groups to spend time considering the Key Principles and Recommendations of one of two specific practice guides.
After the breakout discussions, there will be an opportunity to reflect as a bigger group and consider implications for practice and service development.
When you register for the event, please also click on the ‘poll’ link^ to indicate which practice guide you are most interested in hearing about, followed by your second choice. At the event we will link you to the breakout room for your preferred practice guide.
