Earned Settlement - a World Social Work event
The Diaspora Social Workers SIG has members who originate from overseas and currently study or work in the UK. The group celebrates the contributions of diaspora social workers in the UK and promotes their interests within BASW and with other organisations.
This webinar takes a look at the recent changes to UK immigration regulations, the impact of earned settlement proposals on diaspora social workers, what BASW and the SIG are doing about it, and what collective action we can take.
Join BASW and the Diaspora Special Interest Group to hear about the Home Office proposals for earned settled status that would create different timeframes for eligibility for immigrants who wish to apply for settled status in the UK, and how they would impact social work and social workers. Under the current system, many migrants can apply for permanent settlement in the UK once they have lived here for a set number of years. The new proposals would replace that route with 'earned settlement' which means that instead of qualifying through time spent in the UK alone, people would need to meet a wider set of requirements. There are also factors which increase the qualifying time, such as claiming benefits.
