Since the implementation of the Care Act 2014, working with adults who may be at risk of harm and undertaking safeguarding adults’ enquiries has seen a shift in emphasis from process to personalised responses.

The latest report from the National Child Safeguarding Review Panel was published on 11 March 2025. “It’s Silent”: Race, racism and safeguarding children. This report was undertaken on behalf of the Panel by Jahnine Davis and the VKPP Data Insights Team with support from the Panel member subgroup.
Many students and Newly Qualified Social Workers report to BASW that they are experiencing prejudice and discrimination in practice placements and their ASYEs, telling us that they find it difficult to address these issues as they fear this may reduce the likelihood of passing their placements or ASYE.

This course equips professionals with the skills to see beneath the surface, critically analyse a child's journey, and understand the deep and lasting impact of trauma. It also explores the experiences of those caring for children -acknowledging the challenges faced by parents and carers supporting a child with a trauma history. Participants will be encouraged to critically reflect on existing pathways and consider new, compassionate approaches that scaffold trauma-responsive, recovery-focused practices—benefiting the whole family and the world of the child.

This one-day programme is designed as a peer learning experience and refresher, providing detailed case law/practice updates and a reflective space to support those working in-depth with MCA and DoLS processes, BIA colleagues in practice, authorisers, and mental health assessors to explore these current issues in practice.
This training course to help social workers better understand the trials and tribulations of stepfamilies. The course is aimed at exploring the key differences, thinking about how and why stepchildren are harmed and what social workers can do to support these families. Offering insights into spotting early warning signs to prevent abuse, neglect and child deaths.
Research findings and practice experience provide compelling evidence that animal abuse in the context of domestic abuse is a tactic of coercive control and an act of animal cruelty (Arkow, 2014; Barrett et al, 2017; DeGue et al, 2009; Fitzgerald et al, 2019; Newberry, 2017; Richards, 2009, Wakeham, 2025). Although the link between domestic abuse and animal abuse is uncontested, it is an issue that is often not translated into practice.
